Aviva says new drivers with telematic insurance policies improve their driving faster than those on standard motor insurance policies. It suggests telematic insurance helps drivers reduce collision claims by almost 50%, after a year of driving while those on standard policies see collision claims drop by almost 30%.
Aviva says new drivers are twice as likely to have a collision in their first year of driving and believes mandating the uptake of telematics insurance could help drivers during their highest-risk period.
Owen Morris, CEO UK personal lines at Aviva, said: “Sadly, too many people are seriously injured or killed on our roads every year through driving inexperience and poorer driving behaviours involving young drivers… Action needs to be taken to make our roads safer, not just for young drivers, but also vulnerable road users and other motorists who may be involved in accidents where a younger person is driving.
He added: “We’d encourage government to consider making telematics policies a legal requirement for young people during their first year of driving. Additional measures, including exempting young driver telematics policies from insurance premium tax in the first driving year, could also help make insurance more accessible and affordable.”
