Flood Re research promotes simple solutions

Research from Flood Re and the University of Hull has shown that low-cost tapes are better at stopping flood water breaching doors than traditional sandbags. The tests, commissioned by Flood Re and carried out by the University of Hull, demonstrate that flood putty tape, duct tape, aluminium tape and yellow plastic tape all perform better than sandbags when applied to the outside of a doorway.

The tapes reduced water leakage by as much as 98% with the lowest performer reducing leakage by 80%. This compared to the 70% reduction achieved by traditional sandbags. The tests also examined temporary flood barriers, which delivered mixed results ranging from full protection to failure. Their efficacy also relied more heavily on the skill of the installer.

Jonathan Kassian, head of flood resilience at Flood Re, said: “Sandbags remain a symbol of flood protection, but these tests turn that assumption on its head. What we have found is that some relatively simple and affordable products can do a much better job of keeping water out.

“Flooding can be incredibly distressing and, when bad weather is on the way, people may have very little time to act... Having the right products ready, knowing how to use them and making your home more resilient can make a real difference.”
