Direct Line for Business, which is part of the Aviva group, has released figures from a freedom of information request to UK police forces that show there were more than 26,000 tool thefts in 2025.
In 2022, Direct Line for Business says the average claim for tool theft totalled £3,220.87. In 2025, it hit £4,206.60. Figures for January to September this year show the average cost has eased to £3,980.40 although the year is not finished.
Gareth Powley, senior technical underwriting manager at Direct Line for Business, said: “For tradespeople, tools are far more than just equipment. They are their livelihood. Having tools stolen can be devastating, leading not only to the cost of replacement, but also lost work, cancelled jobs and disruption for customers.
“With the clocks going back and darker evenings creating more opportunities for thieves, it's vital that tradespeople take steps to protect their tools and vehicles.”
