Axa UK has published research that shows many UK adults do not recognise potential signs of financial abuse in relationships. The insurer has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the issue, which includes projects with charities Women’s Aid and Smart Works.
The research canvassed views from 2,000 adults. It found that 21% believed that being removed from an insurance policy could be dismissed as ‘normal’ or ‘not serious’ in a relationship.
Tara Foley, CEO at Axa UK and Ireland, said: “We aim to protect what matters most and we have a valuable role to play in supporting our customers when they’re in need. That's why with expert guidance from charities, we have trained our call centre teams to support those who disclose that they are experiencing abuse.
“Education and open dialogue are vital, with research showing there’s a gap in awareness around domestic abuse. Greater understanding can help prevent harm and ensure help is reaching those who may be struggling.”
The research also highlighted that almost three-quarters (74%) of respondents agreed that financial services companies should do more to raise awareness of financial abuse and to protect those affected.
