Aviva reveals rocketing cost of student claims

The average value of student claims has more than doubled from £781 in 2022 to £1,766 in 2025, according to data from Aviva. The carrier says theft accounts for more than half (56%) of student claims and that laptops and computers are the most commonly claimed for item (40%).

The carrier says theft ranged from break-ins to cars and student accommodation to items being stolen while students were travelling or socialising. Aviva said mobile phones (22%), bicycles (19%) and bags/luggage/wallets (19%) were also commonly claimed for items.

Steven Jackson, home product manager at Aviva, said: “Embarking on university life is an exciting time for many young people and it’s often the first time they may have lived away from home or by themselves. Laptops, computers and mobile phones play a vital role in student life, but they can also be attractive targets for opportunistic thieves due to their value and portability.”

He added: “Insurance may not be top of mind, but, as our data shows, unfortunately items can get stolen or damaged. It’s worth checking if you have insurance in place, whether that’s with the university, a student bank account or through a parent or guardian’s home insurance policy.”
