Annual fraud in 2024 remains above £1bn – ABI

Data from the Association of British Insurers puts detected fraud in 2024 at £1.16bn, up by 2% on the £1.14bn recorded in the previous year. The professional body said insurers uncovered 98,400 fraud-related claims in 2024, which was up by 12% on the number identified the year before.

Motor insurance remained the hot spot for fraud and insurers pinpointed 51,700 fraudulent claims worth a total of £576m. The second most prolific area for fraud was property. In 2024, carriers identified 18,700 bogus claims worth £189m.

Mark Allen (pictured), head of fraud and financial crime at the ABI, said: “It’s reassuring to see the industry making continued progress in tackling fraud, but with insurers continuing to detect over £1bn worth of bogus claims, the fight must continue and there will be no let-up in insurers’ pursuit of fraudsters.”

Ursula Jallow, director at the Insurance Fraud Bureau, added: “It’s more important than ever for the insurance industry to stand together in the fight against fraud.

“Insurance fraud harms society, and the industry recognises its responsibility to protect honest consumers by continually strengthening its prevention and detection strategies.”
