Alps creates pothole add-on for brokers

Managing general agent Alps has responded to the deterioration of the UK’s road surfaces by launching a pothole add-on policy for brokers. The insurance provides up to £2,000 of cover for pothole related damage to vehicles including private cars, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes.

The cover has individual limits ranging from £150 to £500 for tyre damage, wheel damage, wheel alignment, suspension repairs and bodywork, paint and headlight damage.

Alps cited research from the RAC that said there were 225 pothole-related vehicle breakdowns per day in February 2026 and a total of 26,048 incidents recorded in 2025. The MGA said the average repair bill for pothole damage was £460.

Michelle O’Reilly, managing director at Alps, said: “We’re delighted to launch this product exclusively for brokers. With the number of potholes continuing to rise across the UK, it’s more important than ever for vehicle owners to protect themselves against the rising cost of repairs.

“While standard motor insurance policies often cover pothole damage, policyholders can face increased premiums at renewal, loss of their no-claim discount, and high excess payments. Our add-on solution addresses these challenges by providing targeted, affordable cover that helps keep drivers on the road.”
